Preparing the next generation of leaders in cancer care requires more than classroom instruction. It requires meaningful engagement with healthcare systems, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the communities they will one day serve.

AMPERE Fellowship was established to provide trainees with opportunities to apply their knowledge in diverse clinical and research settings while developing the skills needed to address complex global health challenges. Through partnerships with institutions in Ghana and across Africa, the program exposes fellows to different models of cancer care, medical physics practice, research collaboration, and health system innovation.

As part of the AMPERE Fellowship and the Global Health Catalyst Ghana program, the AMPERE Fellows participated in academic meetings, hospital visits, community engagement activities, and discussions with government leaders, researchers, clinicians, and international collaborators. These experiences provided firsthand exposure to different models of cancer care, medical physics, and health system strengthening while reinforcing the importance of global partnerships in advancing oncology education, research, and patient care.

During the Global Health Catalyst Ghana Summit, the AMPERE Fellows shared the projects they will continue developing during the remainder of their training. Their presentations reflected ongoing work in medical physics, cancer research, technology, and clinical innovation, while demonstrating how international partnerships strengthen scientific inquiry and broaden professional perspectives.

The summit also highlighted the achievements of the Global Engagement in Medicine (GEM) Fellows, who presented the culmination of their experiences in Ghana. Together, the GEM and AMPERE programs demonstrated the value of international learning experiences in preparing future leaders in global oncology.

Field experiences throughout Ghana further enriched the fellows’ training. Visits to hospitals, universities, and rural communities gave them an opportunity to engage directly with healthcare professionals, researchers and community leaders. These interactions deepened their understanding of how culture, policy, infrastructure, and community engagement influence cancer care delivery.

Programs such as AMPERE are an important investment in global health because they prepare scientists and clinicians to work across disciplines, institutions, and national borders. By combining technical training with international collaboration and community engagement, the fellowship helps develop professionals who are equipped to advance cancer care while building partnerships that strengthen health systems around the world.

The Uganda Ambassador Her Excellency Robie Kakonge paid a courtesy visit to the University of Pennsylvania  meeting with AMPERE PI Professor Stephen Avery, This follows the visit of Prof Avery to Uganda recently to explore/establish Uganda as an AMPERE site for AMPERE Fellows, The Ambassador met with UPenn officials, More details soon. 

Prof Stephen Avery visited and toured the Uganda Cancer Institute as a site for the AMPERE program. He met with the Director of the Institute Dr Orem Jackson, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance, During the visit, Dr Avery also participated in discussions on establishing a Global Cancer Financing Platform that could expand collaboration between USA and global institutions with Uganda as one of the pilot countries.

AMPERE PIs Professors Saiful Huq and Stephen Avery visited Bangladesh one of the AMPERE sites and participated in the BICC congress. This follows a visit meeting with government leaders in Bangladesh including the Bangladesh Head of Government  and Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus
