in collaboration with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine &
Global Health Catalyst

Welcome
to the AMPERE Program
The AMPERE (Access for Medical Physicists to Education and Research Excellence) program, developed in partnership with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), is a new NIH-supported Research Education initiative designed to strengthen the global medical physics workforce through immersive training and mentorship. AMPERE provides a mentored 12-week hands-on fellowship in LMIC partner institutions, paired with a year-round virtual mentoring and collaboration platform.

Why AMPERE?

Growing cancer burden/disparities and critical need for medical physicists in global health
Recent needs assessment work by the International Council (IC) of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) has identified key areas including in research and education that could avail win-win collaborations between the USA and low- and middle income countries (LMICS) and need for training of an elite cadre of next generation AAPM AMPERE fellows/leaders, empowered to pursue careers involving global health

AMPERE PIs Visit Uganda and Bangladesh
AMPERE Program Principal Investigator and Director of Global Medical Physics at UPenn, Prof Stephen Avery, led a U.S. delegation to Uganda to explore and establish the Uganda Cancer Institute as one of the AMPERE sites in Africa for AMPERE fellows. The visit including tour of the Uganda Cancer Institute, meeting with the Director and local site mentors, and meetings with the Ministry of Health, Foreign Affairs and Finance to ensure impact and sustainability.
